Who builds Frigidaire heating and cooling equipment
Electrolux owns the Frigidaire name, which Nordyne dates back to 1916, and licenses it for furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps. The company that builds them is Nordyne, based in O'Fallon, Missouri. It started in St. Louis in 1919 as the International Oil Heating Company, spent years under the Nortek Global HVAC name, and was bought from Madison Industries by Rheem in October 2024. As of 2026 it operates as Nordyne again and describes itself as part of the Rheem family.
That family tree matters for repairs. Nordyne also builds Maytag and Gibson equipment on shared designs, and Rheem and Ruud are now sister brands under the same owner. When Nortek launched its FG7TE/FG7TN 96% furnace in 2017, it sold a Frigidaire version, a Westinghouse version and a similar Maytag model. The current Frigidaire line, launched in 2024 as the Total Package, comes in two tiers: Essentials for single-stage equipment and Brilliance for two-stage and variable-speed equipment.
Reading a Frigidaire model number
The sticker inside the blower door, or on the condenser's side panel, says far more than the badge. Frigidaire's own spec sheets decode it. For a furnace such as FG7SD-054D-T24B1:

Outdoor units follow their own pattern. In FSA4BE5M1SN18K, the S means split system and the A air conditioner (H would mean heat pump). The E is the efficiency step: D is up to 13.4 SEER2, E up to 14.3 and F up to 15.2. The 5 means R-454B refrigerant, M a micro-channel coil, 1S a single-stage scroll compressor, and 18 a size of 18,000 Btu/h.
What goes wrong with Frigidaire furnaces in a Minnesota winter?
A Frigidaire condensing furnace lights in the same order every time. The inducer starts, the pressure switch proves the vent is open, the silicon-nitride hot surface igniter glows, the gas valve opens and the flame sensor confirms flame. Current models use SmartLite ignition control to stretch igniter life, but igniters and flame sensors still wear. A failed step leaves a flash code on the control board's LED, and that code is where our diagnosis starts.
When one of these furnaces quits on a sub-zero night, a pressure switch is the usual suspect. The FG7SD carries two: one on the inducer and one watching the condensate. A trap full of sludge, a condensate line frozen where it runs along the rim joist, or PVC pipes frosted shut at the wall will all shut it down. What usually fails on a Frigidaire air conditioner?
Current FSA condensers use all-aluminum Apex micro-channel coils, which Frigidaire says hold less refrigerant than conventional coils. They also have high- and low-pressure switches, so a unit that trips on a hot July afternoon is often pointing to a dirty coil, a failing fan motor or a charge problem rather than a dead compressor. The newest units run on R-454B, one of the lower-GWP refrigerants that took over in new residential systems from 2025. Your existing R-410A Frigidaire can still be repaired and recharged with R-410A.
An FSH heat pump carries a Minnesota house through spring, fall and the milder stretches of winter. For the -20°F nights it needs a second heat source: the gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup, or electric strips where there's no gas line. Our post on dual fuel heating explains the switchover.
What does the Frigidaire warranty cover?
Frigidaire's current warranty covers equipment built after January 1, 2018, and most of it depends on registration. Registered equipment gets 10 years on parts, a furnace heat exchanger warranty that grows from 20 years to limited lifetime, and the Quality Pledge, which replaces a qualifying unit if its heat exchanger or compressor fails in the first 10 years (1 year if it was never registered). If the equipment came with a house you bought, run its serial number through Frigidaire's registration site before a big repair.

Is a Frigidaire furnace made by Electrolux?
No. Electrolux owns the Frigidaire name and licenses it for heating and cooling equipment. Nordyne, the O'Fallon, Missouri maker formerly called Nortek Global HVAC, designs and builds the furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps. So a Frigidaire furnace shares engineering and parts with Nordyne's Maytag and Gibson equipment, not with a Frigidaire refrigerator.
What's the difference between Frigidaire Essentials and Brilliance?
Essentials is the basic line: single-stage furnaces with fixed-speed blowers and single-stage condensers up to 14.3 SEER2. Brilliance adds two-stage furnaces with variable-speed blower options, the FSA4BF air conditioner and the FSH4BF heat pump, both up to 15.2 SEER2. Through a long Minnesota heating season, a two-stage furnace spends mild days on low fire, which means longer, quieter cycles and fewer cold spots.
How do I check my Frigidaire warranty?
Frigidaire's registration site looks up coverage by serial number. On equipment built after January 1, 2018, registering within 60 days of purchase brings 10 years of parts coverage, and the Quality Pledge replaces a qualifying unit whose heat exchanger or compressor fails in that time. Labor isn't included, Frigidaire won't ship parts to homeowners, and it says self-repair voids the warranty.
Does a new Frigidaire air conditioner use a different refrigerant?
Yes. Current FSA air conditioners and FSH heat pumps are built for R-454B, and the model number shows it: a 5 right after the efficiency letter means R-454B. An existing R-410A Frigidaire can still be repaired and recharged. Frigidaire's warranty requires a matched system, so a new R-454B condenser goes in with a matching indoor coil rather than the old one.
Why does my Frigidaire furnace shut off during a cold snap?
On a condensing FG7 furnace, look first at the pressure switches. The FG7SD, for example, has one switch on the inducer and a second on the condensate side, and either will stop the burners if the drain, trap or PVC vent is blocked. On a sub-zero night that blockage is usually ice or frost. We clear it, find out why it froze and fix the routing.
