Gibson's place in the Nordyne family
Nordyne traces the Gibson name back to 1908, and Gibson's 2023 product paperwork says the trademark is used under license from Electrolux Home Products. The equipment itself comes from Nordyne of O'Fallon, Missouri. Rheem acquired the business, then named Nortek Global HVAC, from Madison Industries in October 2024, and it has since gone back to its older Nordyne name.
Gibson sits at the value end of that family. Its site talks about pushing the value of a dollar, and the split systems on its 2023 list come from the W-Series, the economically priced tier Nortek added in 2019 after the premium F-Series in 2017 and the mid-range E-Series in 2018. The furnaces are close relatives of Nordyne's other brands. When Nortek launched the KG7SD-E 95% furnace in 2016, it offered Gibson, Kelvinator, Philco, Broan and NuTone versions, with the MGC2SD-E as the Maytag equivalent.
Reading Gibson model numbers
Gibson's own paperwork and Nortek's product announcements give most of the code:
- KG starts a Gibson gas furnace on the 2023 list. KG7T models are two-stage and KG7S models single-stage, and a final E or N marks the 96% two-stage furnaces. KG8SD is the ultra-low-NOx version.
- WSA is a W-Series split air conditioner and WSH a W-Series split heat pump, built from 1.5 to 5 tons.
- P7RF and Q7RF are packaged units: an air conditioner and a two-stage heat pump, each in a single outdoor cabinet.
- GXH marks the ductless heat pumps, with series names such as Lomo, -22 Heat Pump, Flex Match and Ultra Side Discharge.
The serial number on the same plate dates the unit: on Nordyne equipment its 4th and 5th digits give the year of manufacture and the next two the month. That tells us whether Gibson's post-2018 warranty terms apply.
Gibson furnaces and W-Series condensers in Minnesota
Gibson furnaces run from 80% to 96% AFUE, in single-stage fixed-speed and two-stage versions, and the single-stage models come in upflow, downflow and horizontal configurations. A basement furnace is almost always upflow; a horizontal unit suits a crawlspace or attic, and a downflow unit feeds ducts that run below the floor. Ignition runs through SmartLite, which Gibson says learns the furnace's start-up characteristics to extend igniter life. Flame sensors still collect residue, and a furnace that lights and then drops out usually needs its sensor cleaned before any part gets replaced. Our flame sensor guide explains why.
W-Series condensers have a wire guard that holds a plastic mesh over the coil against hail, which earns its keep after a June thunderstorm, and a polymer base pan with extra drain holes so water doesn't stand in it. Nortek also put a "Charge Me" QR code above the refrigerant port that links to its charging calculator. We charge from the manufacturer's data and measured subcooling or superheat either way, but it's a handy cross-check.
Gibson's current split heat pump is a single-stage unit rated 14.3 SEER2 and up to 7.5 HSPF2. In a Minnesota house it carries spring and fall, and it hands off to the furnace or electric backup heat when the weather turns bitter.
Does Gibson make ductless mini-splits?
Gibson also sells ductless mini and multi splits, and its website gives them their own section and their own warranty. The range runs from 120-volt single-zone units at 9,000 to 12,000 Btu/h, small enough for a single room, to multi-zone heat pumps that serve two to five rooms from one outdoor unit with wall, ducted, cassette, console or floor/ceiling heads. The top series is rated to heat at -22°F, with a two-stage compressor and Wi-Fi controls. That's the one to look at for a sunroom, a bonus room over the garage or an addition built on a slab.
Ductless has its own winter service list. The outdoor unit needs to sit above the snow line on a stand or wall bracket, the defrost water needs a place to drain without building an ice mound, and indoor filters clog fast when a head runs all day. How long is a Gibson warranty?
Registration decides most of a Gibson's coverage. For furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps made after January 1, 2018, unregistered equipment gets a 3-year limited all-parts warranty; registered within 60 days of installation, it gets 10 years. A registered gas furnace or gas/electric packaged unit also moves from a 20-year heat exchanger warranty to limited lifetime. Mini-splits carry their own terms: 5 years on parts and 7 on the compressor.

Will a Gibson mini-split heat a room through a Minnesota winter?
It depends on the model. Gibson's top ductless series is rated to heat at -22°F and uses a two-stage compressor, which suits a bedroom addition or a converted porch. The basic single-zone and 120-volt models work better as a supplement to existing heat. We check the model's low-temperature rating and the room's heat loss before recommending one.
Is a Gibson the same as a Frigidaire?
Same maker, different model families. Both come from Nordyne and share engineering, controls such as SmartLite ignition, and many parts. Gibson furnace model numbers start with KG on its 2023 list, while current Frigidaire furnaces start with FG. Nortek's 2019 W-Series redesign covered Gibson and Frigidaire air conditioners together.
