Who builds Maytag furnaces and air conditioners?
Maytag's heating and cooling website is plain about it: the equipment is manufactured under license by Nordyne of O'Fallon, Missouri, and the limited warranty comes from the manufacturer. The company was still Nortek Global HVAC when Rheem bought it from Madison Industries in October 2024; today it runs under the Nordyne name inside Rheem, which makes Rheem and Ruud Maytag's corporate cousins.
Inside the cabinet, a Maytag is a Nordyne design with Maytag's own model numbers. Nortek's 2016 release for the Gibson KG7SD-E 95% furnace named the MGC2SD-E as the similar Maytag model, and its 2017 FG7TE/FG7TN 96% furnace, sold as Frigidaire and Westinghouse, came with a Maytag counterpart, the MGC2TE/MGC2TN. What sets Maytag apart is the packaging around that hardware: its own model prefixes, two tiers and a replacement promise tied to registration.
M1200 or M120: reading a Maytag model number
The prefix on the rating plate tells you which tier you own:
- PGC is an M1200 gas furnace. The T in PGC2T means two-stage; a -VS suffix means a variable-speed blower and -FS a multi-speed one.
- MGC is an M120 gas furnace: single-stage (the S in MGC2S) with a multi-speed blower.
- PSA and PSH are M1200 air conditioners and heat pumps; CSA and CSH are the M120 versions.
On the furnaces, the letter after the S or T marks the efficiency class. On Maytag's current list, A and K models are 80% AFUE, D and M models up to 95%, and E and N models up to 96%. On the outdoor units, the last letter steps up with efficiency: CSA4BD is 13.4 SEER2, CSA4BE up to 14.3 SEER2 and CSA4BF up to 16 SEER2 with two-stage cooling. Older Maytag equipment carries other prefixes, such as MGF and PGF on furnaces, and Nordyne's literature library still covers them.
How does a two-stage Maytag furnace run in a Minnesota winter?
Maytag's M1200 brochure says its two-stage furnaces run on first stage about 80% of the time, at about 68% of full capacity. In a heating season that runs from October into April, that means most of the winter on low fire: longer, quieter cycles, smaller temperature swings and more air through the filter.
Ignition goes through the SmartStart control board. Maytag describes it learning the igniter's heat-up time by searching for the point where ignition fails, then adjusting the next trial. On the service side, Maytag's two-piece door uses captured screws, which sounds minor until a loose door screw rolls under the water heater.
Many Minnesota furnaces also carry a whole-home humidifier. Keep it turned down as the outdoor temperature drops, roughly 25–35% indoors in cold weather and lower in deep cold, or the windows frost and drip. What wears out on a Maytag air conditioner?
PSA and CSA condensers wear the usual summer parts: run capacitors, contactors and condenser fan motors. The two-stage PSA4BF and CSA4BF spend most of their time on low speed, which pulls more moisture out of the air on a sticky July day. Maytag's matched indoor coils are built for the A2L refrigerants that newer systems use and have built-in leak detection, and a coil installed with a Maytag system takes on the system's warranty.
Older iQ Drive systems are inverter-driven: the compressor speeds up and down instead of switching on and off. Nordyne has moved models like the PSA4BG and PSA4BI to its discontinued list but still posts its iQ Drive field-wiring and thermostat-controller documents, and we work from those before touching the controls. Registration, the Dependability Promise and booking
Maytag markets one of the longest parts warranties in residential heating and cooling, but it only applies once someone registers the equipment. Registered M1200 and M120 systems get 12 years of limited parts coverage and a limited lifetime heat exchanger warranty. The Dependability Promise adds heat exchanger and compressor protection: 12 years on M1200 and 1 year on M120. The brochure ties the promise to the original owner, so if the system came with a house you bought, we check what still applies before you count on it.
When a Maytag is worn out, we can quote a new one where it fits the house, and the size comes from a Manual J load calculation. Is Maytag HVAC the same company as Maytag appliances?
No. Maytag's heating and cooling site says the equipment is manufactured under license by Nordyne, the Missouri company formerly called Nortek Global HVAC and part of Rheem as of 2026. Nordyne designs the furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps and provides their limited warranty. The washers and refrigerators are a different business, so furnace parts come through HVAC suppliers, looked up by model number.
What's the difference between Maytag M1200 and M120?
M1200 is the upper tier: two-stage furnaces up to 96% AFUE, most with variable-speed blowers, plus PSA and PSH outdoor units that include two-stage models. M120 is the value tier: single-stage, multi-speed furnaces and CSA and CSH outdoor units. Both carry a 12-year limited parts warranty when registered. The Dependability Promise is where they differ: 12 years on M1200, 1 year on M120.
What does Maytag's Dependability Promise cover?
On M1200 equipment, Maytag says it will replace your heat exchanger or compressor if it fails in the first 12 years. On M120 furnaces and compressor-bearing products the promise runs one year. It sits on top of the 12-year limited parts warranty, requires registration and, per the M1200 brochure, applies to the original owner. Your own certificate has the exact terms.
My Maytag furnace tries to light more than once. Is that normal?
Now and then, it can be. Maytag's SmartStart board learns how long the igniter needs by working toward the point where ignition fails, then adjusting the heat-up time on the next try. An occasional retry can be part of that learning. A furnace that retries every cycle, or locks out, has a real fault: a weak igniter, a dirty flame sensor, low gas pressure or a venting problem.
Can you still fix an older Maytag iQ Drive system?
Usually. Nordyne moved iQ Drive air conditioners such as the PSA4BG and PSA4BI to its discontinued list, but its literature library still carries their documents, including the field wiring and thermostat controller instructions. Inverter boards and variable-speed compressors cost more than the parts on a single-stage condenser, so on an older system we price the repair against a replacement before you decide.
